Museum of Sydney
Warrane, Gadigal (Sydney)
PLAYSCAPES is a series of interactive installations that explore sensory, cognitive, emotional, and social play, turning the museum into a dynamic playground for visitors to create and imagine.
Sydney's patterns and colours, inspired by its natural and urban landscapes, were captured in graphical icons developed by Sydney artist Beastman.
Gallery One offers an abstracted Sydney, where visitors can build their own playful world using the icons as building blocks alongside an immersive projection-mapped room and soundscape.
In Gallery Two, smaller-scale icons on a custom interactive table form a puzzle. The visitor's designs take on abstract faces (pareidolia), with patterns moving in real-time on a large projection above.
We added a 150m2 maze at the museum entrance and fifteen hidden animated screens for visitors to discover using their Playscapes guide. This guide also serves as a mask and offers colouring activities.
