Powerhouse | Gadigal (Sydney)
THE LAB is a multimedia space for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning, open to the public and visited by schools to foster problem-solving and creativity.
The Powerhouse commissioned Junior Major to create a series of interactive experiences using their existing projectors, motion-tracking hardware and inspired by their collection. Drawing from graphical scientific models, including those by Lawrence Hargrave, we envisioned visitors as models.
We made four digital mirrors that track motion in real time to reveal hidden forces affecting the human body. The largest is a 9m, 270-degree projection showing contact (mechanical, frictional) forces. Three smaller installations explore non-contact forces, gravity, magnetic, and air resistance.
The applications run at 60fps, utilising ZedCam 2.0 cameras, mapped 4K laser projectors, a custom Unity application and immersive soundscapes.
